In this complex interior study, Eunice Lee explores the architectural density and cultural iconography of Los Angeles’ historic Last Bookstore. Utilizing a sophisticated chromatic palette, Lee interrogates the relationship between the monumental scale of the environment and the granular detail of its contents. The composition is defined by a rhythmic arrangement of framed works and shelving units, which Lee treats not merely as objects, but as geometric planes that modulate the viewer’s perception of depth and space.

Executed in her South Pasadena studio from original archival studies, the work serves as a tactile investigation into the interplay of artificial and ambient light. Lee employs a deliberate manipulation of shadows and “ambient overlays” to distill the sprawling interior into a singular, cohesive atmosphere. By juxtaposing broad, gestural washes with precise, detailed brushwork, the artist captures the spatial resonance of the location, transforming a public landmark into a private, meditative exploration of light, color, and memory. The work’s presence is further emphasized by the raw, deckled edge of the paper, highlighting the physicality of the medium in dialogue with the depicted space.
